Ultima X Odyssey: Lush Environments

Courtesy of Ben “Bandit LOAF” Lesnick, Joe Garrity of the Origin Museum, and everyone who took part in the Mythic Archiving Project in 2008, the Ultima Codex is pleased to present this video, the fifth in a series of videos included on a preview DVD that was assembled for the game, but which may never have been released. This chapter of the DVD highlights the game’s gorgeous, Unreal-engine powered environments.

You know I wonder if there would have been a major competition between UX and WoW for the MMO market.

Also it would seem that the Ultima series was close to beating several major games to the market except they failed in some way:
U8/Diablo – incomplete and lacking sufficient QA to make the jumping actually fun and easier to analyze
U9/Morrowind – potentially more immersive, but buggy, crashy, incomplete, and with insufficient time to build a game with a well-constructed and executed plot
UX/WoW – failed to be released (may or may not have been ready before WoW was released) but beats WoW graphically

Morrowind had one big thing going for it that Ultima IX did not (and very likely would never have had): The Construction Set.
