Ultima Forever: Possible Lord British Cameo?

One of the more…controversial aspects of Ultima Forever is that Lord British will not play a role in the game. Set 21 years after the events of Ultima 4, Quest for the Avatar instead features the good king’s daughter, known now as Lady British, who rules in his stead as the good king roams the stars.

Well, as it turns out, things have changed slightly. With Richard Garriott’s blessing, Lord British will evidently be making some sort of appearance in Ultima Forever.

  1. I’d like to believe that Mythic has respect for the properly, but after supposed years of development, they’re launching with two classes, and aren’t using the Gypsy to determine classes with the virtue questions.

And even then Lord British should still be around according to canon, he isn’t?

I really would love to see some life breathed back into this franchise. But I fear this may be Ultima in name only.

To be fair, it hasn’t been an easy two years. Read the liveblog…the entire (or almost the entire) team got pulled to bolster SWTOR for a spell. And the project had to be rebooted at least once.

It’s not so much of matter of respect as it is a matter of “We have a small team, a small budget and deadlines.”

Mythic definitly would want to launch the game with all Eight Classes. This is just not possible though. And they said they were trying to get Druid ready for launch too!

And while the Gipsy wont be used to determine the class, there’ll still by the Virtue questions as part of the character process.

It still makes little sense to me; it’s a remake/reboot of Ultima 4, but it still set 21 after the events of said game. Does this mean we are to become a different Avatar? If that is the case it might answer whether your co-players can become embodiments of the virtues as well (assuming it’s not a competition to become Avatar).

And how will having a daughter (pre U7) affect continuity of games thereafter; unless she dies and is never spoken of again it, sounds like their aiming for a parallel universe/shard deal.

Roaming the stars though, that sounds like LB. Maybe he’s gotta go make war/peace with the Killrathi, or else he’s up there with Cosmonauts for personal reasons.

I don’t see what’s so hard to understand about this.

It IS a reboot of the series.

It is set in an alternate timeline/universe from the Core series as we know it and thus it is not meant to follow the exact same stories or characters.

Except that instead of just rebooting Ultima IV, they’ve aimed for an alternate timeline where an alternate version of Ultima IV happened that was more or less like the original : Lord British was there, a Stranger came and became the Avatar and it’s now 21 years after these events.

But basically since it is a reboot you should just forget about the core series and see itas a separate thing.

I’m fairly certain that in the lore the virtues were something that everyone was trying to live by, but only those who devoted their life to all eight of them became the corporeal embodiment of them; the Avatar. I think there is plenty of room to tweak the lore for multiple avatars, especially since it’s an alternate timeline. Instead of The Avatar it could be a title like a knight. Of course, I’m sitting here on the outside, looking in. It’s possible someone in alpha already has a clear idea how the storyline will go.
