Extra Life: Final Day! (Also: Games List!)

:extralife:

In a bit under 24 hours, the Extra Life event begins; on Oct. 15, 2011, I’ll attempt to play video games for 24 hours straight in the hope that you’ll support me by giving just $1 per hour ($24 total). Your donation is tax-deductible and 100 percent of your gift goes to help sick kids.

I’ve finalized my games list: I will begin with a speed-run through Ultima 6, followed by a speed-run through Mass Effect 2 (in which I will play as my as-neutral-as-she-can-be, romance-free Infiltrator Shepard), followed by as much Dungeon Siege 3 as is needed to round out the 24 hours.

The Ultima 6 speed-run will be recorded using DOSBox’s built-in video export; I probably have enough hard drive space free for that. I won’t have enough hard drive space free for a FRAPS capture of the Mass Effect 2 speed-run, but I am contemplating Twitcasting it instead. If I do go that route, be sure to follow my Twitter timeline for links to the livestream.

Update: That won’t work; the internet connection at this hotel just doesn’t have the bandwidth for it. So I think I’ll set IrfanView to take screenshots of Mass Effect 2 every 30 seconds or so, and upload those when I’m done.

I set a goal of $250 for myself; that’s what I’d hoped to raise for the Children’s Miracle Network and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. I’m not too far off that goal at present, but there’s a little more to go. Browncoat Jayson, whom you all likely know from his comments here and his articles at the Digital Lycaeum, is also participating, and hasn’t quite reached his fundraising goal either.

On the other hand, the Ultima-themed Extra Life team, Vas Mani, is quite close to its goal (which is also $250).

So: One last time, I’ll ask you all to consider a donation to the Extra Life cause. Having seen first-hand the level of care that Children’s Miracle Network hospitals deliver — having had my own kids benefit and perhaps even be saved by that care — I can assure you that it’s a worthy cause in support of a worthy thing.

Do you need me to donate you a bedpan? ;P

Just some empty Red Bull cans, thanks.

I would donate to countless organizations, but my shit just got fucked up extra hard. I’m not in prison or anything, but did have to file an eviction with magistrate court against my roommate.

Less $600 per month ($20 per day), less nine cats, less one human, plus two rooms. I’m hoping I can finish a room and lease to two Mexicans or otherwise upstanding citizens.

Heh…would that I drank Red Bull!

Sorry to hear about the roommate, less so as regards the cats. Not that I hate the critters; I actually quite like them…in small, manageable numbers. Nine? That’s more in the category of pathology.

Oh, and Micro: Naw, I should be good. Bathroom is only a few steps away.

Red Bull tastes like chemicals. Coffee, Dr. Pepper, anything is better. Sweet tea with ice and a lemon is good.

Nine cats in one room, even with visitation, is cruel. I don’t run a cage here. At least soon the cats will run around again in an apartment or home. May they poison it with their clawing and pissing!

What’s funny is that she didn’t understand that the only legal way to get someone to move out of your house in the U.S. is to forfeit your lease (there was no lease) or to have papers issued against you. Friends or not, I had no choice.

Was just thinking, in Ultima V or VI there should be animal cages with animals crowded together and you could kill, rescue, or buy/sell them.

Cool. Is tea as important in Canada as in England? I think you’re in Canada, is that right?

Coffee is hands-down an excellent beverage. I like mine black so I just taste the beans.

As far as my previous statement about animals in cages in Ultima, it could be like the room full of mad children in Ultima V. Just something bad that the player could rectify amicably or otherwise feel morally obligated to intervene in. How would the Avatar respond to being shown an abusive and cruel zoo by the mayor of a town or village?

Yes, Canada. And no, tea isn’t a “thing” here in the same way that it is in Britain. It’s certainly prevalent, but so is coffee. I’ll drink either, though I think coffee is my preference. I do put a bit of cream and sugar in, though typically only enough to take the edge off of the beverage’s acidity. I’m also rather picky about which coffee beans and brands I’ll actually accept in what becomes my drink, and there are a couple of roasting companies local to Edmonton that have received a lot of money from me.
