Your friendly neighbourhood copyright watch again 🙂
The patch itself would be a safer way than offering the exe. Just pointing this out for yourself to make up your mind

This was not made by Finir Dragon. Finir Dragon was the guy who made that Akalabeth remake in the ’90.

I don’t even remember how I patched the .exe or where I learned to do it. On the DosBox site perhaps? There’s nothing you can do with just the .exe in any case so it should okay as far as copyright goes

Whether you can do something with the exe or not doesn’t matter to copyright 😉

I found how to patch it, it was at the DosBox site:
    http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?showID=717&letter=A

http://tippach.business.t-online.de/wdosx/ and then run stubit.exe on ak.exe and setup.exe and delete cwsdpmi.exe as you don’t need it anymore.

That’s how to do it without having to replace the .exe by this one. A bit more cumbersome thougH.

    Much better 😉
And I’m sorry for being such a copyright nazi but I care about this site and sometimes you have to be annoying to people (in this case Kenneth as siteowner) you care about. I hope you know what I mean 😉

A question if I may chaps… The Akalabeth that comes with the Ultima Collection CD seems to run fine under Dosbox. Is the not a “real version” ?

  8. Sergorn says:

Perhaps DosBox has been updated since last year, but I can tell you for a fact that one year ago DosBox did not like the UC version of Akalabeth and kept crashing it.

  9. Nope — I just tried running the UC version of Akalabeth with DOSBox 0.74 and the bleeping thing crashed right after I gave it my lucky number.

As for providing the patched exe vs. the directions, AFAIK, the patched file is different enough from the original — when not accompanied by any other files from the game — to not challenge copyright over Akalabeth.

Heck, unless WtF Dragon has permission from EA, a large percentage of this site violates copyright or trademark laws, as do the majority of fan projects linked to or hosted here. That’s especially the case as, in order to keep the site up, he has to have the “tips appreciated” & perhaps affiliate links, which could be construed as an attempt to profit off another’s work.

I can republish the patched EXE when I get a moment. I might mail you the link first, so you can grab it and see if it works.

No point in publishing something that doesn’t solve the problem!
