Markee Dragon's Inverview With Richard Garriott…Continued!

Markus “Markee Dragon” Eikenberry has posted another (and blessedly, much shorter) video of his interview with Richard Garriott. Unlike in the first interview, where Garriott talked about Ultima history and his plans for Portalarium, in this interview the focus is on Garriott the family man…who is soon to be a married man, as well:

Family man!

Another interesting glimpse into the mind of the man who created Ultima.
My question is: if Garriott and his wife Laetitia Pichot de Cayeux have any children, will any of them become “third generation” astronauts?

Great interview. I liked Garriott’s sense of humor, remarking about his children knowing him before he dies on a rocket. Just awesome.

The music at the end sounded like a sampled rendition of the main theme from the Narnia movies. It had a similar chord progression at least.

Also The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind’s main theme has a similar chord progression to both mentioned tracks. It’s just faster and with trumpets, trombones and upper-mid range French horns.

Too much time on my hands… Check this out if you read/write music.

    The lovely Morrowind: [YouTube] /watch?v=ZWuNf4gxwuM

And the lovely Narnia: [YouTube] /watch?v=1KsGRBN2m04

    and again Narnia: [YouTube] /watch?v=EH6sFj1hHnM

What’s really crazy is that large parts of these songs also sound very much like the theme from Metal Gear Solid for PS2: [YouTube] /watch?v=QiPon8lr48U

Other than Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D, could this be the new powerful melody of fantasy games these days?

Around the 2:40 mark of the Metal Gear post, the real comparison between Metal Gear, Morrowind and Narnia begins.

Sanctimonia again: Harry Gregson-Warner (Wagner?) did the soundtrack for the first Narnia movie, and I believe he scored at least a couple of the Metal Gear games. That could be why the two tracks sound familiar.

Hmm yes definitely some big similarities between all those pieces of music. It’s not just the chord progressions, but the rhythms and instrumentation (especially the way percussion is used). And it’s not just these examples either – it’s pretty much the go-to sound for any epic fantasy movie of the last 20 years or so (and more recently video games). And the simple reason it’s so widely used is that it works so darn well! I have never played Morrowind or Metal Gear Solid and I’ve never seen Narnia, but just listening to those pieces really makes me want to do all three.

I’m actually a music teacher myself and at some point I’m determined that I will devise a decent unit on video game music. It’s such a unique area of music that so many kids are into it seems such a missed opportunity to engage them in the classroom.

I’ve always loved music for computer games. I put this together of the clips with some images I grabbed off Google image search:

Hopefully it won’t get marked as Content ID Match by some bullshit patent troll no one’s heard of.

I looked it up and it’s Harry Gregson-Williams who helped the Metal Gear Solid soundtracks. I also just saw that he had something to do with the Naria score. Crazy…

I wonder what’s up with the Morrowind main theme, though? I’m tempted to make an uber-dramatic Santimonia theme using a similar chord progression just to see what it would sound like.

      Williams! That’s the name.

But yeah, him. I seem to recall Sergorn was telling me about his work with Metal Gear some months ago.

  7. Infinitron says:

The composer of Morrowind’s soundtrack, the legendary Jeremy Soule, also worked on some sort of Narnia documentary.

This guy has got it all! Programmer, philanthropist, philosopher, dashing good looks, perfect body, revolutionary landmark games in multiple genres, haunted house curator, smoking hot babe of a fiancé, (is she like 20 years younger than him… what a lucky guy!) spaceman, entrepreneur, business owner, world explorer, master of ALL trades, the list can go on and on. Women love him, men want to be him… and some men love him too!

Anyone that disagrees is just a straight up jellin, hater. Anyone that thinks they could come close to the eternal, illustrious glory of LORD BRITISH is just a poser or a wannabe. Editor’s note: C’mon, Micro, you know better.
