Outage notice: this evening

I was alerted to this by my hosting provider this morning:

(mt) Engineers will need to perform maintenance on hardware for a Storage Segment of Cluster.03 on Tuesday, 1/4/11.

We will keep this page updated with the most current information.

DATE/TIME WINDOW:
Maintenance will take place on Tuesday night (1/4/11), between 6 PM and 7 PM (PST). To see when this maintenance will occur in a different time zone, please click here.

PER-CUSTOMER IMPACT:
Expected customer impact will be up to an hour, though we are aiming for less.

This will result in unavailability of websites, FTP, SSH, and email. To see which Storage Segment your service is on, please refer to the Server Guide page within the (mt) AccountCenter.

MAINTENANCE ACTION:
(mt) Engineers will be performing maintenance on the physical hardware of the Storage Segment.

This will result in Aiera, The Sword & Shield, The Codex, Return to the Serpent Isle (and their forum), and Shattered Moon being offline for about an hour this evening.

Just so you all know.

    This is outrageous!

  2. Eh, it’s not really that bad.

In the end, sites like this live on a hard drive somewhere; drives get old, get bad sectors, and fail eventually. It happens. I like having a host who is, generally speaking, attentive to the health of its hardware platforms, and who is willing to undertake preventative maintenance. In general, doing so helps them avoid issues in the future which might put the site offline for a goodly while longer.

Granted, 2010 was perhaps not the best example of them being successful in this regard, but I’m still confident that they will do better in 2011.

I’m too busy being blindly outraged to be that thoughtful.
