Ultima 6 in iDOS (with pictures!)

I finally managed to take a few minutes and get this working. I already had Ultima 6 installed on another machine for use with DOSbox, so getting the game into iDOS on my iPhone 3GS was a simple matter of zipping up the game directory, copying it into iDOS via iTunes, and unzipping it again.

Oh, and then I had to delete my previous savegame so I could start fresh. And sit through all the introductory sequences. And create a new character. And then watch the rest of the introduction.

It…takes a surprisingly long time. I always forget about that. Anyhow, here’s some screenshots of the game in action:

The game runs pretty well, overall. Some of the animated elements — flying crossbow bolts, for example — are a tad slow, but I think I can probably tweak the DOSpad settings in iDOS to improve upon that.

Realistically, though, I don’t really care. Ultima 6 is my favourite game ever in the history of ever. And now I can play it on my iPhone. I cannot describe adequately, with mere text, how awesome that is. This comes close:

Except Ultima 6, not ribbons...

Awesome, pure awesome. How you feel about Ultima VI, is how I feel about Ultima V. These are heady times.

That potion-mixing character creation sure was a cool touch.

    Hey all,
I’ve been playing Ultima VI for the first time this month on my ipad and MAC. I agree its a great game. I’m loving it. Its quiet complicated too. Ultima VII seemed more linear. Waiting for Roland MT32 support for the ipad and a more customizable way os assigning keys. That way you can play in full screen 🙂

I assume that it is possible to save your game progress then?
I succesfully installed Day of the tentacle on my iPhone but im not able to save my game progress, the game says the disk is full.
Since it is an adventure game it is a big problem.

    Any tips?

Michael: Ultima 6 lets me save games, yes. I don’t know why Day of the Tentacle doesn’t work…although…are you playing it under DOSbox? If so, try it under ScummVM instead; it should be fully supported therein.

Iam using iDos which i guess is running under DOSbox.
Is there a ScummVM port for iPhone?
I´m currently trying to install some more games to test if i can make a savegame at all…
Iam guessing that iDos isnt allowed to save files on the iPhone.

ScummVM is totally available for your iPhone…if you’ve jailbroken it. I recommend the GreenPoison jailbreak, myself; seems to work for every possible model and baseband.

iDOS is allowed to save files on the iPhone (if it weren’t, I wouldn’t have been able to start a new game in Ultima 6), but it’s possible that there’s just something about Day of the Tentacle that causes issues. Honestly, I don’t know enough to say for certain, but that’d by my guess.
