Want to Edit the Graphics Tiles for the early “Ultima” Games? Check Out the “Ultima Tile Editor!”

News of this utility popped up quite suddenly on the Ultima Dragons Discord server recently. According to the developer, it’s a tool for extracting the tile graphics from Ultimas 1-5 (specifically, the PC versions of each). At present, it only supports the default tilesets for each game; custom tilesets cannot be exported. Moreover, where there are multiple tilesets available by default (e.g. the different CGA and EGA tilesets in Ultima 5), only the default tileset will be exported (EGA in the case of Ultima 5).

However, once exported, tiles can be edited in a graphics program of your choosing, and the modified tile imported back into the game. So I guess it would be more correct to say that while other custom tilesets aren’t supported, this utility does give you the ability to create your own custom tiles.

If you want to check it out, you can grab it from the project’s GitHub page, or from the brand new project entry here at the Codex. Please note that you’ll also need to ensure that you have .NET 10.0 installed in order to run the editor.
