“Ultima IV: Threat of the Trinity”: Release Date Announced
It’s been a while since Cambragol has posted an update to the website for his Ultima 4 expansion, Threat of the Trinity, but this week there’s exciting news to be found thereat:
September 16th, 2025 will be the 40th anniversary of the release of Ultima IV on the Apple II. To celebrate this occasion, Threat of the Trinity will be available for download from that date. Stay tuned to this page for more release info.
Now, there is a bit of unfortunate news as well, to go along with this. Some time ago, Cambragol expressed the desire to produce a physical box with various “feelies” (maps, manuals, all the good stuff) for this project. Sadly, this is no longer the case:
I did not find a way to make the feelies happen, though I really, really, reeeeally tried. Mostly it came down to 3 factors: 1. Insufficient interest: The cost to produce certain aspects of the feelies (mainly the box and the book) was too high, and additionally required a bare minimum of 250 orders (more depending on the printer(s)) With less than 100 interested parties, the production/cost ratio was too high. 2. Anonymity: I wanted to maintain my anonymity, and requesting cash from people, while holding to that, was just not going to work. 3: Drama: I’ve seen way too many crowd sourced ventures devolve into absolute nightmares. Didn’t look forward to that. I tried to offset that by finishing EVERTHING first, but still, production/delivery snafus seem common.
Even so, Threat of the Trinity will finally — after five years in development — be seeing a digital release, to coincide with the fourth decade of the Ultima game that inspired it. And along the way, it got a lot more expansive than Cambragol had initially planned, which hopefully means there’ll be just that much more of it to enjoy.

Thanks a lot for that.
I used to play on Ultima IV 40 years ago. And I think I will show to my 11 years old son to show him and be again on the path of the Avatar !!!
I had the pleasure of beta testing this and it is absolutely stunning how good this fan expansion is.
It adds an immense amount of content to the game and stays true to the feeling of the original Ultima 4 throughout. It really feels like what an expansion for the game would have been like if it had been made decades ago.
Thanks for the high praise Fenyx! Couldn’t have made it as good as it is without your feedback.
Hopefully other Ultima IV fans feel the same way. I’d be great if everyone who cherishes those Ultima IV memories from their youth could get a bit of that magic back with this expansion.
Can I ask if dungeons still play out in first person? This is my biggest gripe with IV and V, I’ll still play your expansion regardless, it looks fantastic.
Yes, no change there. 3D dungeons were one of the sales points back in 1985.
I did make new Dungeon Graphics engine at one point, which added graphical dungeons like Ultima V, but I am not including that with the final release. And it would still be 3D.
In any case, I hope you enjoy the expansion!
