Check Out “Caves of Lore”, an Upcoming Retro RPG Inspired by “Ultima 6”
Caves of Lore is an upcoming retro RPG that – per its website – is slated for release in 2023. According to its developer, the game is “a turn-based CRPG that combines elements of environmental exploration and character interaction with tactical, grid-based combat. The story focuses on a small island in the world of Solamria.”
The developer also lists a few influences that have informed the creation of the game:
Ultima 6, The Magic Candle, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday and Final Fantasy all come to mind. These are just some of the games that I grew up with, and there are elements from each in Caves of Lore.
It’s worth noting that one very Ultima-like element in the game is the influence of the world’s three moons, the phases of which will have many different effects throughout the course of the game. Moongates – or something very like them – also appear to be present in the game. Caves of Lore will also boast day/night cycles, NPCs with daily schedules, NPC and animal companions, deep skill trees and other character customization options, an extensive magic system, and hundreds of items for players to collect, equip, and use.
Interestingly, according to the storefront page on the game’s website, Caves of Lore is going to be released on Steam, iOS, and Android. There’s a launch trailer for the game embedded above, and you can find a couple more videos on the Caves of Lore YouTube channel showcasing different aspects of the game.
