And to be fair, wholly apart from her religion or her sainthood, Catherine is a profound and interesting example of the power — yes, power — of being humble and holy. Because, when we consider the social status of women in the 1300s, we wouldn’t expect any woman — let alone a layperson, a French peasant girl — to have the ability or clout to move even the Pope to action.
