Wallpaper for the Week (RIP Satoru Iwata)
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata passed away on Saturday. The man had a long and storied career; he worked on the The Legend of Zelda, Mario, and Animal Crossing games at Nintendo proper, on Pokémon Gold and Silver and Pokémon Stadium while at Creatures Inc. (which he helped found), and Balloon Fight, EarthBound, and the Kirby series at HAL Laboratories before that. Born in Sapporo, Japan, he took an interest in programming at a young age, and wrote several number games which he shared with his friends during his high school days.
And, more than that, he understood very well the industry he was in, and what was important thereto:
On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.
I’m not a console gamer, but I do have a deep and lasting respect for Nintendo and their approach to making games. So this week, there’ll be an appropriately Nintendo-themed wallpaper; Views of Britannia will resume next week.
