Crowfall: $2 Million Raised; Combat Archetypes; Two-Factor Authentication and More

There have been a number of updates posted to the Crowfall website since the beginning of June. We got a look at the three main “combatant” character archetypes (the Centaur Legionnaire, and the Human Confessor and Knight). Some additional information about the Confessor was later posted, fleshing out the backstory of how that Archetype came to be.

The confessor is all about firepower — both figuratively and literally. Thematically, she fits the “glass cannon” role, and is capable of dealing massive amounts of damage from a (preferably safe) distance. In addition to direct damage, she has a number of tricks and combos that revolve around either damaging her opponent directly, burning them over time, building up “sin” in her opponent (and subsequently “absolving” it through fire), or scorching the earth in a hail of Holy Fire.

The Legionnaires were also examined in greater detail.

With the Legionnaire, we tried to make him a hybrid role, a tank/support archetype that was a solid tank (though not as solid as the Knight), highly mobile (which makes sense, given his nature), and to give him a small number of tools that he could use to facilitate team-based play at the tactical level.

We’ve been using the words “tank” and “DPS” and “support” for our roles. When we say he’s a support archetype that’s accurate — but it’s also probably not what you are thinking, given that we are building a different game. Perhaps we should call him ‘tactical support’? Jump over to the forum and tell us what you think.

ArtCraft Entertainment also posted some “greybox” images of the work-in-progress model of a player stronghold; these were on sale until last Sunday, evidently. So now I feel kind of bad that I’m a couple of weeks behind on Crowfall-related news (even though I’ve no idea as to how many of you have backed the game). They also published another business update (in which they announced that they’ve begun a new round of equity fundraising, and have raised over $500,000 to invest in further development on Crowfall), and have implemented two-factor authentication to better protect the security of their backers’ user accounts.

There’s also a new Q&A video, the first installment in what will evidently be a monthly feature.

As well, last week — Tuesday, the 16th of June, exactly a week ago — the project reached the $2 million mark in its ongoing crowdfunding campaign. Since then, the Crowfall team have published an update on future stretch goals for the project (which also touches on things like their pledge gifting program and layaway purchasing plan).

And most recently, Design Lead Thomas Blair posted a lengthy update concerning the combat physics in the game. ArtCraft’s combat team have evidently been experimenting with incorporating mass, drag, and friction into character movements and combat.

“As well, last week — Tuesday, the 16th of June, exactly a week ago — the project reached the $2 million mark in its ongoing crowdfunding campaign. Much like Shroud of the Avatar, ArtCraft Entertainment have raised more funding via their project’s website than via Kickstarter (not that they didn’t do well on Kickstarter, of course).”

This is incorrect. 1.7 Million of those 2 are from Kickstarter.
