OtherSide Entertainment will formally launch the Kickstarter campaign for Underworld Ascendant at some point tomorrow (in the morning, I would expect). Here’s the text of an email they sent out to everyone who signed up for updates on their website:

Hello Avatars,

As fans of the original Ultima Underworld, you know that the game has been called the “first truly immersive first-person 3D game” and has been noted for influencing an entire generation of games, including Doom, Thief, Deus Ex, Skyrim and BioShock.

We intend to continue that legacy with Underworld Ascendant. We will retain the core gameplay that made the original games great, but at the same time push forward with new innovations, to once again lead the category of immersive first-person RPGs.

But this can only happen with you, our community, getting behind us. We’ll be launching a Kickstarter campaign on February 4th, to help fund a significant portion of the development. In addition to the many amazing pledge level rewards, you will have the chance to be a part of the creative process as we develop the game. We will be looking to you to participate in discussions and help us bring the game to life.

We aren’t shy about our ambitions to make a great game, and we need you to not only join us in this endeavor, but to be an advocate for the project.

Not only should you back the Kickstarter, but we’re counting on you to spread the word. Tell anyone who is interested in games, whether they played the original Underworlds or not. We’re hoping you will embrace the opportunity to be involved in the ambitious, yet attainable goal of changing the face of gaming yet again. Without you, Underworld will stay buried. You are the Avatar, if you’re up for the task.

Now let’s go out and do this thing!
