Forgotten World: Another Book Snippet Released
Iceblade has released a second snippet of a new book that will appear in future builds of Forgotten World:
My own birth fell close to this project’s official beginning in the year 369, and as I had the honor of serving as apprentice to Nicodemus, it has been my privilege to grow up alongside it. Of the earliest years of the Revocanda, of course, I have little personal knowledge – as my primary pursuits at such an age were feeding livestock, chopping wood and occasionally standing in for a missing Knight’s Bridge piece – but I have been told that progress was very slow for the first decade and a half of the undertaking.
The term “revocanda” is a participle — either feminine or neutral, in the nominative, accusative, and votive forms — of the Latin word revocandus, which itself is the future passive participle of the word that means “to recall”.
In other words, it means “which is to be recalled”. Exactly what is to be recalled, and when, is…well…not covered in the text above. One notes that there was a spell called Recall in Ultima 7, which made use of the Virtue Stones and worked in conjunction with the Mark spell. The caster could use Recall to return to a the location at which a particular Virtue Stone had been marked.
A similar spell could be found in Ultima Online, and it worked in much the same fashion…albeit utilizing runes instead of Virtue Stones.
Now, as to whether any of this excursus into Ultima history has any bearing on the story that Iceblade is revealing piece by piece, I cannot say. If nothing else, it’s certainly fun to (forgive me) recall such things to mind.
