Random Wednesdays

Supergiant Games’ Transistor got a number of previews recently, and it must be said that the game looks pretty darn cool. It also looks rather familiar, of course, to those of us who have played Bastion…but that sort of similarity is by no means a bad thing.

And like Bastion, Transistor will make heavy use of narration to drive its story. Supergiant have a great formula at work here, with in-game narration adapting to the circumstances unfolding on screen. It worked to great effect in Bastion, and I’m sure they’ve improved on it since then.

Irrational Games has let some staff go in the last week or so, probably as a consequence of wrapping up development on BioShock Infinite and its DLC.

Infinite’s setting, Columbia, is now featured in Disney Infinity, by the way.

Did ArcheAge actually fail? XLGAMES did recently undergo a restructuring, but it’s probably too early to label the game a failure. That’s Massively’s take, at any rate.

By the way: Torchlight 2 won’t see a console release. You know, in case you were hoping that it would.

And development on Might & Magic X is proceeding apace. The developers have recently been musing on what sorts of puzzles to include in the game, as well as asking the community what the focus of the first game patch should be. More interesting than all that, I think, is this development blog post, which talks about how the developers scout out real-life locations as inspiration for in-game scenery.

Oh, and Richard Garriott’s publicist sent me a link, earlier this week, to this Kickstarter campaign, which is for a game called Neos Land:

The Calgary, Alberta-based developer aims to create a “high fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game” that can quite literally claim to have been “developed by fans”. Essentially, the developer (NeoJac) is — not unlike what’s being done with EverQuest Next — allowing backers to shape the world thanks to a voxel-based engine (which runs atop Unity, actually). Backers are also being invited to submit assets to the Unity store, and to participate in roundtable discussions, all with the goal of allowing players to shape the game in every way, and at every step of development.

For those of you who are curious about such things, it aims to create an open-world, open-PvP game at the end of that process. Which, granted, kind of kills my interest in it…but your mileage may vary.

Since this is random, what in the world is Joe Garrity’s unspammable contact information? Does he have a Twitter account? Searching Google yields defunct web sites with hard-coded IP addresses and forum posts equally broken. If I could choose to speak with only two people about Ultima, it’d be between him and Chris Spears. Kinda frustrating, his accidental or otherwise apparent elusiveness. 😉

I can certainly get you in touch with Joe. Might even be able to get you an email address for Spears, assuming he’d be up to chatting. I’ll ask.

I don’t know if you’re on Facebook, but he does frequent the Dragons Facebook group, so he’d be easy enough to contact there.
If you’re not, I’m sure somebody who is could try and put you in touch with him.

      I’m here guys–
My apologies for not having a forum or an easily available email address. I’m available through FB tho–contact me there, as it’s my primary communication device now.
While I am totally eclipsed by others in their knowledge of Ultima, I’m honored to be counted among some of the folks that Ultima gamers would want to speak to. 🙂

Thanks WtF, Duke and the man himself, Joe.

@ Joe, I’d always heard mention of you here on UC but hearing you speak in the Dragonsmeets and seeing you show off your collection I was pretty impressed. When someone says something like (paraphrased), “I think everyone goes through a hex-editing phase” you just can’t help but count them as a brother.

Facebook it is, then. Though I don’t really dig FB, so maybe I’ll stick to harassing you in the Dragonsmeets.

Speaking of Dragons, I’m officially one as of the 11th. Crazy that after seeing them on the usenet in high school some twenty years ago only now did I apply. So I’m now Boolean Dragon, though you may call me whatever you like (Kevin, Sanctimonia, that Crazy Asshole, or what-have-you). 😉
