Ultima Forever & The Eight Virtues: Shame

Mythic have wrapped up another week of looking at one of the Eight Virtues over on the Ultima Forever Facebook page. As the focus this week was the Virtue of Honor, they have focused their Friday post on its antithesis: Shame.

The Dungeon Shame first started in Ultima 4 and contained the Purple Stone of Honor. Once a gold mine, it had now been overrun with creatures of evil. Along with the Purple Stone, you could also find several magical orbs to grant the Avatar enhanced intelligence and strength.

In Ultima 5, the only way to reach Dungeon Doom was beginning with Shame and travelling to the Underworld. Once this dungeon has been entered, you will never again need to return to the surface.

Come Ultima 6, the upper levels had very few monsters, and miners had begun to return in search of gold. An ex-pirate named Ybarra ventured too far and became trapped in the mine, requiring the Avatar to come and save him in exchange for a piece of Captain Hawkin’s treasure map.

Shame had transformed into a decently-sized maze by Ultima 7, with several traps and false leads. However, it was necessary to traverse this complicated labyrinth in order to reach the Generator at the end.

By Ultima 9, Shame had shifted to the lower portion of Britannia in wake of the Guardian’s destruction. Again Shame contained very few monsters, but remained a huge puzzle to traverse in order to reach the column in the end.

For the companion of Honor, there is no one better to represent this virtue than Dupre. Make sure to read the story of how Dupre trained a group of Gargoyles, and how he taught them the virtue of Honor http://bit.ly/10RJpzP

No word on what next week’s Virtue will be, unless I have hopelessly lost count and Honor was the eighth. Either way, we sadly did not see the Paladin class introduced to Ultima Forever as I had been hoping.
