Ultima Forever & The Eight Virtues: Destard & Serpent’s Hold
Mythic have wrapped up another week — and another examination of one of the Eight Virtues — on the Ultima Forever Facebook page. They have been studying the Virtue of Valor all week, and per the pattern of their posting they have chosen to close out the week with a look at Destard, home of the dragons.
Destard has always been home to some of the worst horrors in Britannia.
In Ultima IV it was was filled with such evil, the Great Council sealed the dungeon entrance to prevent any of it from ever escaping.
Yet in Ultima V it had to be reopened in order to connect to the Underworld and retrieve Lord British’s Amulet.
In UVI, UVII and UIX it became home to vicious dragons. In IX only the dragon Talornia was left. Talornia made a deal with the Guardian – she was to gain worshipers and have all unwanted visitors kept away in exchange for a steady supply of eggs from her clutch.
Serpents Hold is located on the Isle of Deeds, and has a history filled with tales of brave knights in battle. Built before the events of Ultima IV, the knights of the hold were said to be valiant warriors with no fear in their hearts. One of the few locations to change very little, not much happened to this location until just before Ultima IX. During the rise of the Columns throughout the land, most of Serpent’s Hold sunk below the sea. However, the Bell of Courage was still protected by a loyal knight named Lyssa, who then entrusted it to the Avatar.
Geoffrey has been a loyal companion to the Avatar since the events of Ultima III. He journeyed with the Avatar for many of his adventures, although sometimes elected to stay home (as he did in UVII) and be available to train the Avatar.

Next week, they’ll be taking a look at the Virtue of Justice.
