Ultima Forever & The Eight Virtues: City of Valor
The Ultima Forever Facebook page has been updated again, this time with a composite image of various iterations of the city of Jhelom that have appeared in different Ultima games.
Jhelom! One of the older cities in Britannia, it was founded in the early days when Britannia was known as Sosaria. Not changing much between Ultima 4 and Ultima 5, Jhelom has always been the city to represent the virtue of Valor.
The city grew in Ultima 7, no longer contained within fortress walls.
Come Ultima 9, the city had been completely destroyed by a volcano along with Serpents Hold. This volcano was provoked by the nearby column and its corrupting influence on the virtue of Valor. In exchange, the survivors of Jhelom founded a new town named Valoria.
In Ultima Online, Jhelom is also known as the Mercenary City. Over time it has become home to soldiers and sell-swords of all levels of experience – from those still in training to brave veterans. Everyone here wishes to prove their courage.
What are some of your favorite memories of Jhelom or Valoria? Do you have a favorite weapon to train with?
Interestingly, there is no map of Jhelom as it appears in Ultima Forever featured in this composite. Equally, we don’t yet have a complete map of the city available, although I can tell you that it is configured somewhat similarly to Serpent’s Hold (including the fact that it is a fortress rather than a town).
As with most things, I find that my personal favourite representation of the city is the one that is given in Ultima 6. The nightly bar brawls, the hidden rune, the occasionally insane fight to reclaim the Shrine of Valor…good times, and good memories.
