BioWare Mondays
Those of you who play Little Big Planet will be able to kit out your characters in Mass Effect-themed costumes at some point this week. Not for free, mind you.
And because that’s an absolutely awful introductory statement, let’s look at something more relevant: this IGN feature on Mass Effect and the need for strong female characters in games.
Also, do check out this odd — but effective — mashup of Mass Effect and Star Wars.
Speaking of Star Wars, Massively has an editorial up examining whether The Old Republic’s free-to-play model works. Their conclusion is that it does for the most part, and that it has several glaring flaws, but also several examples of “getting it right”. Good to know, I suppose.
What SWTOR hasn’t gotten right, however, is player bannings; over 100 players may have been accidentally banned for one week over an apparent terms of service violation; some manner of automatic exploit detection evidently got a bit trigger-happy.
Work is proceeding on The Old Republic, of course; a bunch of new content is being lined up for release this summer, and the free-player-friendly double experience weekends will begin again in late June.
Oh, and how’s this for cosplay?
By the way: if you live in Australia, BioWare will be at PAX there in mid-July.
Bullshit, there’s no need for more strong female characters in gaming. It’s already bad enough that about every major female in Western video games is a blatant, boring Mary Sue these days, as the American media is afraid of giving female characters flaws and making them interesting, with the modern society pushing this “FEMALES MUST BE STRONG!!!” garbage down everyone’s throats. It’s the opposite; they need to lay down that BS and start making female characters more flawed and relatable, especially if they truly want to attract more female players.
