Lord British and Lord Blackthorn!
I missed posting this when it was first released, but…a few days ago, to usher in the final countdown for the Shroud of the Avatar Kickstarter campaign, Portalarium released a video of Richard Garriott chatting with Starr Long…the real-life alter-ego of Lord Blackthorn!
Much of the discussion actually does concern Shroud of the Avatar, but the two men also reminisce at some length about the good old days of Origin Systems.
Starr: “Who has forsaken the Virtues? Is it the player, or is it the world?”
Garriott: “[A world] which has kinda gone beyond, or moved away from, the Virtues as you remember them. […] A shroud can be a robe of concealment or the death robes of something”.
I wonder what that could mean. Reminds me of Peter denying knowing Jesus when things went pear shaped. Maybe following the old ways in New Britannia could be a double edged sword with respect to the new culture.
This interview was the best so far (obviously IMHO). I love, love, love how technical and sharp Starr is, despite looking like a friendly Anton LaVey. Who is he working for these days? Sadly he has no Wikipedia page. Anyway, wholly satisfying interview. Thanks, WtF.
Which reminds me of my earlier question about where all the damn flowers–I mean Dragons–went. Maybe people have momentarily defected to more direct sources? Kinda ironic if that’s the case. Aiera/Codex has been the sinew holding us all together, so in all honesty I feel indebted. Or inebriated. Or both! In any case, thanks again, WtF, Jaesun, Dungy and all other contributors for keeping the bootlaces tight.
Not sure why it’s as quiet as it has been, but I suppose these things ebb and flow some. Spam traffic is up, though, which has been annoying to deal with.
Starr Long is, I believe, at Disney Interactive.
I wish Starr would just go and join Portalarium, this would be awesome 😛
@WtF Like the gentle tug of Felucca and Trammel on the ocean depths… The botnet shit has got to stop. Sorta like busting people for pot, I wish the powers that be would stop the botnets first and worry about inducing hacker suicides second.
@Sergorn That would indeed be awesome. For Starr to go from Disney to Portalarium I suspect SotA would have to make some real bank first. I don’t know if he has a family, but I imagine Disney offers pretty comfortable chairs. The kind that are hard to stand up from voluntarily.
Yeah. Kind of a piss-off.
If anyone gets inadvertently locked out of the site or banned, I apologize. If it happens, just contact me via about.me and let me know your external IP address so I can unlock/un-ban you.
Hey, I still pop up every now and then in comments. Not all the dragons have disappeared 😛
Anyway, I love Lord Blackthorn and have for years. I’ve always wished he would be more vocal/visible like Lord British. I mean, he even LOOKS awesome still in that interview, plus he has really good input, spot on with the question about “forsaken virtues” there.
