Felicia Day’s Ultima Poetry: “Avatar Isle”
You can all thank Twitter user Tel Prydain for bringing this one to my attention, although I’ve since seen it linked repeatedly on Facebook and Twitter.
For those of you who frequented the Ultima Dragons newsgroups, Felicia Day was probably known to you as “Codex Dragon”. She has since gone on to achive no small measure of fame as the writer and producer of the popular web series The Guild, and has worked closely with BioWare on some Dragon Age-themed projects. She also runs The Flog over at Geek and Sundry.
But back when she was a young lass of twelve, her thoughts were set on Ultima:
It’s worth paying close attention to the background images…she made some interesting selections in terms of Ultima footage.
You know what, the single person I remember most from that newsgroup is Whisper Dragon. Holy cow was she a force of nature.
Now that gaming culture it kind of ‘cool’, it’s nice to see a strong female gamer who is genuinely into gaming, not just pandering to the market. Felicia copped some heat from people who asume that her nerd persona is made up – totally unaware that she’s been in the comunity longer than many of them have been alive.
Hey, some background images are from Lazarus 🙂
Yup…I tried to highlight one in the screengrab that serves as the image for this post.
Yeah, that’s the stuff. *snaps fingers*
@Tel Prydain who said, “totally unaware that she’s been in the [community] longer than many of them have been alive.”
How old is she relative to “many of them”? She’s doesn’t look particularly old, as in, less than mid-thirties. No doubt she keeps her age well, but to say she’s been in the community longer than many have been -alive- may be a stretch.
Also it appears as though many of the videos are from a console port, perhaps the NES, which suggests an earlier birthdate. The first NES title was Ultima Exodus (III).
Good video nevertheless.
She has been in the community for a while, and from a fairly young age. Not totally sure when she first joined, but you have to get up pretty early to nab “Codex” as your Dragon name in a room full of Ultima fans.
She’s 33. Had to do an age calculation based on her birthdate via her Wikipedia article.
