Hooked Gamers got a look at Divinity: Dragon Commander recently, and while it’s clear that they loved what they saw, I just can’t help but feel off-balance after reading their description of the gameplay. Aerial battles with multiple unit types I can get behind…strategy, tactics, different strengths and vulnerabilities for each type of aircraft…that’s all good. But then there’s cards that you can play to augment units? And if all goes to pot you can just jump directly into the action as a fire-breathing dragon with a jetpack?
To hear it described, it sounds like the game is trying to be everything. To hear it discussed, however…it all seems to work, despite the very odd blending of playstyles and genres.
Also, don’t miss these screenshots of Divinity: Original Sin from Gamescom.
Those Original Sin screenshots are giving me a major nostalgia rush. Reminds me of playing Neverwinter Nights modules back in my early 20’s…
Two words I think fit Dragon Commander: goofy and pastiche. It could be fun, but we’ll see.
I have your goofy right here, while it wasn’t the deepest of games and had a few bugs for me (or it was my hardware), DragonStrike from SSI, an AD&D title no less, defined goofy dragon battles.
Ah yes, I remember now.
Holy smokes! One word dialogue tree! YES!!!
Oh yes, I should respond that D:OS is pretty much hitting all the right buttons. Wow it looks awesome.
