Wasteland 2: An Interesting Twist

In an update to the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter page, Brian Fargo has sweetened the pot…a lot:

…inXile has reached an agreement with Obsidian for potential design assistance for Wasteland 2. What that means is that Obsidian’s Chief Creative Officer, Chris Avellone, is going to work with our team on the design and writing of the game! It is important to note that we say “potential” as they will come aboard assuming we hit $2.1 million in funding. The good news is that we have already seen a spike in just the few hours since this was announced in a press release this morning.

The original Wasteland was an important game to Chris as he recently stated, “Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance. While I’ve worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, getting the chance to work on the spiritual predecessor to the Fallout franchise is a honor.”

I trust I don’t need to explain to anyone here why this is exciting news?

Bump. No one finds this exciting? Damn thee! It is exciting, actually, but people sending out loud public messages like press releases or requests for interviews always creeps me out a little. I guess I’m just shy (or paranoid), but I mistrust any message said too loudly. We’re all guilty of wanting it, so we should keep an eye out for those who get it.

It would be an honor for any one of us to reach out to and work for each other to bring something intrinsically creative together like a computer game. If Infinitron, Dungy, ThePal, MicroMagic, Sergorn, Dominus, Withstand the Fury, Iceblade, myself, Fearyourself or any other of our brothers and sisters (?) wanted to start a dev team we’d shatter the very idea of gaming.

That the more heavily branded, marketed and networked (business) game should be successful is something that I hope for, as we all need benchmarks for our progress and successful perspectives on gaming.

Unfortunately I can’t afford to give this project more money than I already have done!

I’m not sure my hopes for Wasteland 2 can get any higher than they already are.

When you take a look at what InXile’s been doing lately, it does rather seem that they don’t have the resources to do this on their own. And Obsidian’s been taking a battering lately financially. One company in financial problems, another with the finance but not the manpower. Hopefully it’ll work out for both of them.

I notice that Brian wants to get access not just to Chris, but the toolsets they use for writing and design which could prove very very useful for a turn-based text heavy game.

Yeah this is really really cool news. It’s not all of Obsidian and it won’t bring the staff back, but it gives CA a new thing to do and his literary chops are legendary.

  5. For whatever reason, Chris Avellone is often abbreviated as MCA. I’ve heard differing reports if it is supposed to stand for Mister Chris Avellone or Master Chris Avellone.

Even though it is highly unusual for two development shops that arguably compete in the same market to work together, I had a feeling this would happen. I actually predicted it in an interview I did with Brian Fargo two weeks before it was officially announced.
