New Gallery: Ultima V: Lazarus Regional Profiles
Courtesy of Ian “Tiberius” Fraizer, former project lead of Ultima V: Lazarus and now the lead designer on Big Huge Games’ Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and thanks to the efforts of Dungy from the Codex of Ultima Wisdom, Ultima Aiera is pleased to present thirty documents — which have been broken out into just under 300 images — which are the final versions of the regional profiles for Ultima V: Lazarus.
The profiles are, in essence, the guiding design documents for cities, towns, and other landmarks in what is arguably the most successful of all the Ultima remakes.
There is some truly fascinating stuff to be found within these pages, for the glimpses they provide both into the shape of the world in Lazarus and the thought processes of the remake’s design team. You’ll even find a couple of pictures — of people — in a couple of the documents, with notes about who the person is and which NPCs they should be used as the portrait for.
And, of course, more than a few of the documents are marked up with typed notes and on-the-fly edits.
Anyhow, enjoy! Pull up the images, download the documents, and pore over them. Search out every little detail, and enjoy a fascinating glimpse into the nuts and bolts of how Team Lazarus crafted an epic, ground-breaking remake of a classic Origin Systems RPG. Ultima Aiera is indebted to Ian Fraizer for providing these documents, to Dungy for working to obtain them, and to everyone who worked on the Lazarus project.
Just looked at the PDF for Ararat. It seems, from the writing, that Lazarus was a AAA game in making if not in funding.
