EA planning to bring the "Madden Curse" to the big screen
We can debate the merits of movies based on video games; I can’t particularly think of any games which have yet made an adequate transition to the silver screen (i.e. which haven’t sucked). And…well…the less said about Uwe Boll, the better.
Technically, though, this movie idea that EA is promoting isn’t based on any specific game, but on a peculiar phenomenon associated with the Madden NFL series of games.
Not that it doesn’t sound…wince-tastic when described in this way:
“The story will follow a former ‘Madden’ video game champion who is forced out of retirement just as he finds himself on the corner of the game’s cover — and subject to the curse.”
That’s EA Vice President Pat O’Brien’s summary of the movie’s plot. Colour me less-than-entirely-excited. I’m not sure whether it sounds more like a B-grade attempt at comedy or a B-grade attempt at horror, but either way…you know, I’m beginning to think that maybe, just maybe, video games and movies should remain more or less entirely separate from each other (even though I am kind of stoked by these rumours I keep hearing of a possible Mass Effect movie). Neither media form seems to do well when making the transition to the other.
By the way: Major props to Switched who, in their article, make a rather odd (and yet oddly fitting) comparison to The Last Starfighter.
Sounds very silly. There has been a movie made about gaming in general – 2009’s Gamer, which is a greatly underrated movie IMO. Not a great movie by any means, but underrated.
Admittedly, I have not seen it. But perhaps I will have to check it out.
