The Ultima 7 "Google Map"

To celebrate the release of Ultima 7 Complete on Good Old Games, a gent by the name of Ryan Allen took it upon himself to create an “inspired by Google Maps”-type interface featuring the in-game world map from Ultima 7: The Black Gate.

The map actually boasts a number of handy labels, noting the locations of different landmarks, cities, buildings, dungeons, people, creatures, and encounters.

It would appear that Mr. Allen is making improvements to the map and the site interface on a pretty consistent basis, so expect it to get better as time rolls on. If you want to access the map in a non-cached way (so you can see new changes in real-time), he has also provided an interface for that.

I will have to contact him as something like this would be a large boon to people creating custom maps in Exult, especially the way that I will attempt to create the map for The Savage Empire Remake.

Is there setting for Exult to zoom out and play in pixel perfect high resolution like you could make in this Googlish map ?

  3. Dungy says:

Absolutely. Edit exult.cfg to set the resolution to the maximum your PC can handle. You’ll be a god amongst ants.

I suppose I could build a portion of the world, save, edit .cfg, load, look at things, exit, edit, etc…

This makes me realize just how small the game world really is in U7. It always seemed so big, but all the islands and towns/dungeons are crammed in there pretty tight.

Anyway, awesome job on the googlemap. 🙂

My first words were “Holy shit, really?” Just tried the stable interface and it is awesome.

@SEVERIAN: I played Ultima VII in Exult with the resolution set to 3840×1080 across two monitors and it was breathtaking, so yeah, editing the config file works. If only I had a video card that supported nine monitors in a 3×3 grid. 🙂

@Scythifuge: If this tech could be integrated with whatever world building apps exist for Ultima VII it would be amazing.
