And Now Someone Is Translating Ultima 6 to Italian, As Well

u6-onesta_vs_compassione_ita

So it seems that translating Ultima 6 to languages other than English is all the rage these days.

This project is yet another attempt to translate Ultima 6, this time into Italian. It’s an ambitious undertaking for one person, but Zhanka seems to be making good progress at getting the game’s text translated, using many of the same utilities that Sir John is using for his German translation of the game; utilities that are available right here on this subdomain, in fact.

Thus far, Zhanka has translated the introduction sequence and character creation questions in the game, and will presumably be moving on to the game’s dialogue and other text next. At present, there’s no indication of intent to translate in-game graphics, as Sir John has done with e.g. the title screen, but it’s certainly not impossible that Zhanka could opt to do this at some point.

At any rate, there is now a project entry for the game on the Ultima 6 subdomain. Thou mayest find some additional screenshots thereat.

    Thanks for sharing this.

There is another – meanwhile actually finished – translation of Ultima VI into Spanish, done from SkaZZ of Dementia Traduxiones available here: http://dementia.ludoskopos.com/showProject.php?ref=62
There are translation packs available for Ultima underworld and U7BGFoV Expansion pack, too, onthis site, though I don’t know whether these were done by SkaZZ as well.

    On a sidenote:
When I first started looking into the files to translate for Ultima VI I pretty fast got in touch with SkaZZ who has been extremely helpful in explaining things and assisting on the technical side.

In addition Dreammaster, the guy behind u6edit tool was kind enough to look into his somewhat dated tool AGAIN and up to today still dedicates of what is left of his scare spare time to polish off bugs and pieces and getting it to run flawlessly nowadays

It was only days after I decided to write down my expiriences about how to translate what, that Zhanka contacted me.

By now, we are all still in touch, lively exchanging thoughts, problems and soultions we find while translating the text. They are all really great guys and working together with the lot is good fun.

One more thing I’d like to point out: While it was Paul who enabled us all to get the stuff AND the pictures translated, SkaZZ, having finished the actual translation work, meanwhile has started to program his own translation tool “Avatarkus” which is set up to be an all-in-one editor for items, books and convos of the game. Furthermore decoding the files as well as re-encoding will be done “on-the-fly”. He has not yet released an official version, but I can tell, that the test version I have is already working, albeit a bit unstable at times.

Thanks for your time to read all this scribbles 🙂

    John

Thanks for the update, Sir John! I saw a mention of Avatarkus on Zhanka’s site, and wondered what it was. I’ll have to get a project entry set up once an official build is released.

And of course SkaZZ’ translation needs a project entry too. More work, more work!

    • It’s right!
Working with Sir John and SkaZZ is very funny.
Sharing the job with them is satisfactory!
