Neverwinter Nights 2 Comes to GOG.com!

The Ultima Return team are rather excited about the latest release from GOG:

We are pleased to see, today, that GOG has released Neverwinter Nights 2 along with all of its expansion packs. Previously, NWN2 had been available only through Steam and GamersGate — and unfortunately it was pulled from the libraries of both services some time ago, leaving online retailers like Amazon and eBay (where its prices can fluctuate) as the sole sources for copies of the game.

But those dark times are behind us now. And as an added bonus, the GOG version of the game is (as is the norm for them) DRM-free, making it the preferable (indeed, the superior) option for obtaining a copy of the game. When Ultima Return releases, you can be sure we’ll be encouraging you to grab a copy of NWN2 from GOG…so why wait?

This is a relief to me for another reason: I won’t have to retract this opinion piece anymore, which I was planning to do by the end of the month.

Oh, and by the way, I’m informed that Neverwinter Nights 2 is one of the only — if not the only — game for which Obsidian Entertainment still receives royalties. So if you’d like to support both Obsidian and the Ultima Codex in one go, grab an online copy — or, if you’re like me, a second online copy — by or before January 31st. Or after January 31st, to…but it’s on sale until then.

    What opinion piece?

I didn’t realize Steam dropped NWN2. I still have it in my library.

If you owned the game previously, it remains in your library. You just can’t buy a new copy.

It was probably due to feud over D&D video game licence between Hasbro and ATARI (Hasbro had licensed exlusive rights to develop and distribute D&D based videogames to ATARI) that they eventually settled out of court. In the settlement the license agreement was terminated (still had year or two to go with possibility of extension) and all D&D properties reverted to Hasbro and so all distribution services needed to make new distribution agreements with Hasbro.

They’ll probably return to Steam eventually (GamersGate already has it too) when Steam reaches agreement with Hasbro.
