I went through a lot of trouble to get them and everything so I wrote a FAQ about it for everyone else. Could you please put it up on your WWW page? I would really appreciate it. Also, what FTP sites should I upload it to? Thanks. StevenD460@aol.com Caliaber Dragon -==UDIC==- ------------------------- Commodore 64 Ultima FAQ Version 1.1 by StevenD460@aol.com This is my FAQ for Ultima I-V on C64 and emulators. I have written it because of all the frustration I have gone through trying to get the games and getting them to work. Please e-mail any updates or corrections to StevenD460@aol.com. Q. What is this I have been hearing about Ultima on C64? A. There are many people who love the 8-bit Commodore and own PC compatibles. These people sometimes use emulators of the C64 which allows them to use old software. This software includes great games such as Ultima I,II,III,IV and V. All of this is available on the internet. Q. Why would I want to play Ultima games on a C64 emulator when I can play the PC versions? A. The C64 versions of Ultima III and IV include music. It is good music in fact. It's worth getting them working just for that. Another thing is that not everyone has the PC versions of Ultima and don't want to buy them. It would be illegal to distribute copies of PC Ultimas, but the C64 versions for download are no longer sold so they can be downloaded. Q. Ok, good. Now, where can I get this emulator? A. There are several emulators available for IBM PC, Amiga and Atari. These can be found at several FTP sites listed below. 1. frodo.hiof.no (158.36.33.4) - ftp only 2. apricot.com (199.125.221.2) - ftp only 3. ftp.netcom.com (192.100.81.1) - ftp only 4. ftp.giga.or.at (131.130.12.58) - ftp only 5. http://www.engr.wisc.edu/~conover/c64.html - WWW only 6. lennon.engr.wisc.edu - ftp only The files are in .D64 format. These are disk images for use on PC. You can convert them to raw C64 format and play them on a Commodore if you want too. Q. About these FTP sites... A. These FTP sites are mirrors of the former C64 site watson.mbb.sfu.ca, this site was the originator of the collection. Unfortunately, they had to remove all Commodore files because of people listing it as a 'Warez' site. Here is Jeff Bryer's own post of what happened. Article 5190 of comp.emulators.cbm: Path: newsserver.sfu.ca!c64 From: c64@watson.mbb.sfu.ca (C64 Archive Administration) Newsgroups: comp.emulators.cbm Subject: Watson closed for good Date: 27 May 1995 02:26:45 GMT Organization: I need to put my ORGANIZATION here. Lines: 19 Message-ID: <3q62l5$rhp@seymour.sfu.ca> NNTP-Posting-Host: c64@watson.mbb.sfu.ca It has come to my attention that Watson was being passed around as a 'warez' site and was listed on many 'warez' lists as having pirated software. We've all debated the idea that it's okay to copy software if it's no longer being developed or sold. The result of these warez lists has made other sys admins and the powers that be here nervous with the consequence that the C64 archive at Watson has been removed premanently. It's been a fun year. I'm sad to see it go but there is nothing further I (or anyone) can do. Hopefully the mirror sites won't fall victim as well. I went to the FTP site and only found Ultima I-III, what gives? A. Several people have reported only finding these three. It may be because the files are not in order but are spread through the directory. Also, Ultima 5 is U5.ZIP not ULTIMA5.ZIP. Confusing eh? Q. Okay, I have all the games and stuff, how do I run them? A. Please read the documentations for the emulators you are using. Note that there has been quite a bit of confusion about the documentation of PC64. There are two different versions, one is English and the other is German. The Enlish version is the one with the 'e' in the zip file. Q. I am stuck in _insert name of game here_. A. Check with WWW site: www.why.com/ultima for hint files. Also, try reading the newsgroup alt.games.ultima.dragons. This is the newsgroup for the Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter, an Ultima fan club. Q. Where can I get the manuals for these games? A. Try FTP.EA.COM and look for MANUAL.TXT, MANUAL.WRI, or MANUAL.ZIP. These are the instructions for the 6 pack of Ultima games on CD-ROM. For maps, try WWW.WHY.COM/ULTIMA because there may be some scanned images of them there. Q. I can't get the music working in Ultima V. A. The music in Ultima V can only be heard on a 128. Q. What about these games with the multiple disk images? A. On the shareware version of C64S, they do not support multiple disk images, in other words you will need to shell out $60 to register it. In the shareware version of PC64 you can use multiple disk images allowing you to play the games with more than one disk. Q. In PC64 I try to open these files and I can't. It says they need to be .C64 files. What do I do? A. Okay, you need to pull down the EMULATOR menu then choose NEW. Now, you can push F9 and choose the .D64 file you need. You can continue to do this and make more than one window open and switch back and forth between them. Remember, once you have loaded the .D64 file, push F5 to go into the emulator. You may push escape and goto the menu then come back by pushing F5 again to go where you left off. See the manual for more information.
