The Ultima 6 Remake: Very Good Ideas

Someone — Zygon Dragon, agentorangeguy, whoever — posted an update to The Ultima 6 Remake’s Facebook page recently, which offered up a few thoughts in response to the previous update released by the team. And in the process, it offers us a look at how this particular Exult mod will develop as it progresses:

Very good ideas coming from my last post! It was always my intention to make this remake stay true to the original but expand on parts that need to be expanded on. The gargoyles and humans were at war. The gargoyles occupied the shrines and the next obvious move would be to invade the towns. I definitely want to expand on that wartime feel and look. Would the gargoyles just rush in blindly into a foreign land with no direction, or would they have a tribal leader or general to lead them? They came up from the dungeons, so wouldn’t it make sense for them to create a base of sorts nearby to launch strikes from? How would the aforementioned tribal leader/general react to seeing the Avatar wear the amulet of submission and the war being called off? Sir Geoffrey was supposed to lead the Britannian guard against the gargoyle threat and seemingly threw in the towel after his failed attempt of recapturing the shrine of Compassion. Surely there would be some people out there pretty upset that the war isn’t going in their favor. I’ve got a few npcs in the works that will help expand this wartime aspect, and some very interesting interactions written so far between various npcs and a new party member that can be found. (One of which is a deserter from the Britannian guard who’s got a chip on his shoulder about Geoffery’s lack of leadership and a profound hatred of gargoyles. He’ll be a joinable npc… so imagine the interactions that could be had….) One thing I am keeping in mind, is that for the purists who don’t like the idea of new npcs or things like that, they are optional and can be avoided if that’s what the player wishes. Also, remember all the empty houses that no one lived in that were scattered around some of the towns? Some of them will be considered abandoned and “buyable” from town mayors, so you’ll have places to store your stuff (or loot if you’re an evil Avatar!). Other things will include new interactions, one of which will be cooking raw meat instead of pulling it straight out of the cow and chowing down. So yes, there will be plenty of goodies put into the game, new sidequests to tie up loose ends and such. B)

Okay, yes, wall of text. Still…some very interesting revelations within! Britannia feeling more “at war” would be a nice addition to the Ultima 6 experience. At the very least, it would lend some gravity to the urgency Lord British projects in the player’s initial meeting with him.

This sounds like it’s going in a really good direction. I like those ideas.

Agreed with Goldenflame; sounds fucking awesome. Weirdly I was just tonight thinking of how WtF, I believe, had long ago mentioned his wish that Ultima VI had a more warlike quality to it with respect to the gargoyle invasion. I think that was probably the most flawed design decision in the game. The gargoyles were in Lord British’s throne room from moment one, but no subsequent town raids? They blew a big opportunity in that.

Also anything that increases the world sim aspect, such as cooking meat, is a huge plus.
