Confirmed: Underworld Ascendant and Shroud of the Avatar Share Backstory, Fiction

The latest Update of the Avatar is, of course, a very long read, per Dallas Snell’s style when it comes to such things. That said, the topmost item pertains not only to Shroud, but also to OtherSide Entertainment’s Underworld Ascendant. In fact, it confirms that there is indeed a significant connection between the two games:

We’re especially excited to reveal that, just as the original Ultima and Underworld shared a connection on backstory and fictional elements, so too will Shroud of the Avatar and Underworld Ascendant. There is a portal between the two worlds, which over the ages travelers have crossed, some bringing with them artifacts and arcane lore.

Our partnership, forged in the bonds of creativity, inspires us to continue the legacy. As backers of Shroud of the Avatar, you know how pivotal you are in the development of the game. No longer is there a wall between the fans and the developers. Through the magic of crowdfunding, we can develop the game and check in with fans along the way. We can get a reality check at each step so we’re truly making the game you, the player want. Not only are we sharing storyline elements with Underworld Ascendant, but we share this philosophy of collaborative development. It is a powerful time in game design, where game creators can connect directly to you, the community.

So as you have shown your allegiance to Shroud of the Avatar, bring forth that same spirit and make your pledge to raise the Underworld on February 4th.

So: Shroud of the Avatar and Underworld Ascendant will share, at minimum, backstory and in-game fiction. But wouldn’t it be neat if, somehow, the “portal between the two worlds” could be implemented in both games, reachable by players therein? There aren’t too many games that have attempted to allow players to cross between them (Might & Magic 4 and Might & Magic 5 — together known as World of Xeen — is the last example I can think of), but you have to admit it would be an awesome feature to see implemented.

‘Tis madness. Next we’ll have red moongates which upon entrance deliver the Avatar to the transporter room in one of Star Citizen’s capital ships. Before long someone will be trying to squeeze an Avenger through the chasms of Ascendant’s depths.

I’ve often had the thought that New Britannia should appear in Star Citizen as a planet that can be discovered. Whether one can land upon it and wander through Novia…eh, best leave that up to the designs of RSI.

Heh, people would expect a full SP/MMO hybrid upon landing. It’d be like bridging Ascendant and SotA but worse. They could still work it in, but that would be a bit out there. Maybe if they surrounded it with an impenetrable planetary defense system that would let you get just close enough to see the continents before joining the orbital debris field. I imagine any creative cooperation or lore-sharing between Garriott and Roberts will be more subtle (because a high-tech crossbow is subtle). It is cool however to see these legends with their new [semi]indie studios being friendly and having a little fun. It’s a lot cooler than hearing about the corporate blood letting and all that stuff.
