So Big Huge Games Is Back…Sort Of

Well, I did want to see Big Huge Games make some kind of return after their disastrous closure. I’m not sure this is what I was hoping for, however:

After the debacle that was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, many thought that developer Big Huge Games would never return. Many of the staff, however, were acquired by Epic Games to form Epic Baltimore in 2012, which turned out to be short lived as the studio closed less than a year later. Not ones to admit defeat, it was reported earlier this month that founders Brian Reynolds and Tim Train had acquired the “Big Huge Games” name at auction from Rhode Island and that they would be using it for their new venture formerly known as SecretNewCo.

Their first game was today announced to be DomiNations, a mobile game that takes a page from Civilization, Rise of Nations and Clash of Clans. Players will be able to choose a nation from among the greatest civilizations in the world and lead it to victory throughout phases of human history.

There was a launch trailer accompanying the article linked above earlier today, though it’s now showing as having been marked “private”…at least, that’s the view from where I am. If you can click through and see it, you’ll see what looks to be a fairly decent RTS-like game, with a vaguely Rise of Nations-like feel.

But it’s…not exactly Reckoning 2, is it?

It could be argued at this point that every capitalist on Earth is throwing money at the game industry, and that much as in the film industry the only games with any artistic integrity left languish in obscurity and financial oblivion. What will it take for Poe and Lovecraft to get paid -before- they die? At least the state was able to partially dump its toxic assets…good for it and hopefully lesson learned.
