Nuvie: Progress on Martian Dreams Support

nuviesplash

If you’ve been following the Nuvie changelog at all, you may have noticed these recent changes listed therein:

* Added sprite_move_to_front() lua function to bring a sprite to the front of the display stack.
* Added fireworks to the origin fx intro sequence.
* Started on the MD intro sequence.
* Added new intro_common.lua script for common cutscene functions.
* Added MD font to the cutscene class.

These are, admittedly, small steps; it will likely be some time before Martian Dreams is fully playable in Nuvie. But Eric and his team have now embarked upon the path to supporting it.

And when Nuvie does support playing Martian Dreams through to the end, it’ll put the project in a bit of an interesting position, since Martian Dreams is available for free from GOG. Here, then, will be a case where having the original game data will not be any kind of hurdle for users.

I’m curious to finally play Savage Empire once Nuvie supports it fully, since that’s the one I never finished when it originally came out, but I’m looking forward to Martian Dreams most of all. I remember that one as greatly inventive, fun and pretty original in the way it brought all these historical characters together in a Jules Verne world. Add to that the ways in which it ties into the overall Ultima lore, and all of this made MD very special.

I’m not sure what you’re hinting at here. Are you saying they could bundle Savage Empire and Martian Dreams with NUVIE? I would assume that just because they’re available for free on GOG doesn’t mean they’re freeware, same as with the famous Ultima 4 situation.
