The CRPG Addict Has Finished Ultima 6

Quoth the CRPG Addict: "Dammit, Shamino. You had one job."

“Dammit, Shamino. You had one job.” It still amuses me.

As his most recent blog post announces, The CRPG Addict has finished Ultima 6. Of course, since last we checked in with him, he has actually posted three additional blog posts…of which the completion announcement is the third.

The first concerns his pursuit and completion of the pirate map quest, the optional middle sequence of the game. It was…edifying to read that he too enjoyed the romp through Dungeon Shame; it is one of the most entertaining dungeons in Ultima 6.

Following that, he went into great detail about the game’s combat system, dungeons, creatures, economy, equipment, and magic system. He mostly praises the dungeon design (which, let us be realistic, is probably the best in the Ultima series), seems surprised by the relative simplicity of the selection of items in the game (in terms of e.g. weapons; there are no magic swords or weapon upgrades to speak of, for example), and isn’t particularly a fan of the combat system.

Now, to the completion of the game. I think this might be the most amusing theory about the nature of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom I’ve encountered in a while:

The Codex’s abilities are not insignificant. When you open it, it will automatically take you to a page that has the answer to whatever question is on your mind at the time, which sounds awesome in 1990, but today can be accomplished with a combination of eHow and Wikipedia. It amuses me to think that the Codex is basically an iPad with the Safari homepage set to Google.

He doesn’t actually offer a final rating for the game, promising that this will come in a follow-on post (in which various other bits of messing around with the game will be detailed). So, we can look forward to a little more Ultima 6 goodness, at least.

  1. *sigh* It’s a shame that I totally skipped the pirate map quest during my playthrough of Ultima 6, many years ago. In fact I had used the Orb of the Moons to bypass a significant chunk of the game. Maybe it’s time I play through it another time, and this time enjoy it as it’s meant to be.

Btw, where you wrote “Codex of Ultima Wisdom”, I think you meant *Ultimate* Wisdom… been spending too much time wiki’ing, huh? 😉
