Ultima Forever: A Glimpse Into Poisonwood

Mythic have of course expanded the number of notable locations in Britannia in their vision of it, as realized in Ultima Forever. And since the Virtue of Humility has no associated dungeon in Ultima lore, they took the opportunity last Friday to give us a tiny glimpse into one of the new dungeons that they have created for the game: Poisonwood (which just happens to be located near Cove):

u4e-poisonwood

Poisonwood, a level 14+ dungeon, is an “ancient forest ruins” dungeon to the southeast of Cove, currently overrun with the Weep. It is reported by townsfolk that lizardmen have been responsible for recent abductions, and that those taken have been spirited away to Poisonwood, where the lizardmen are performing some dark magic rituals and experiments. For what purpose, no one knows… but it is rumored that the lizardmen are immune to the Weep, and perhaps may have access to (or become part of) a cure. It is for this reason that some of the townspeople are interested in investigating. Others, however, believe things should be left well enough alone.

Do you have what it takes to brave the evil lurking inside Poisonwood, adventurer? If so, you might listen out for hisssssing noisssssessss.

Lizardmen, you say? A potential cure for the Black Weep? Something old, something new, as they say; lizardmen graced Ultima lore in the times before the Avatar, whereas the Black Weep is a clear and present threat at the time in which Ultima Forever takes place.

Sounds like the humidity levels have gotten out of control; perhaps too much rainfall? Atlanta’s been like that this past month. Shrooms growing on my deck rails, arthropods becoming bolder and mold spanning the breadths of my outdoor furniture. Ungodly environmental changes for a touch of water.

The Abyss was the dungeon opposing Humility (well except in Ultima IX where they inverted Abyss and Hythloth :P).

Canonically, the Abyss opposed all of the Virtues.

        Arguable 😛

Take it up with the wiki team, then. 🙂

Actually, I can kind of see the justification, and I almost mistakenly assumed that the Abyss would be featured last Friday on the U4E page. I was kind of hoping, actually, because I’ve seen some concept art for it, which…damn.

Still…if one wants to get nitpicky, Humility hath no dungeon, since no dungeon specifically espouses the anti-Virtue of Pride. Whereas the Abyss is just generally nasty and opposes every Virtue in turn.

Ah… but that’s the reason the Abyss IS the Dungeon associated to Humility.

Don’t know if you ever seen the video where he explains Virtues and Codex and basically says that the lack of any of the three Principles is *Pride* which is why the Eight Virtue is its opposite, Humility and thus not connected to the three principles.

If No Virtues = Pride and Abyss = No Virtues… so Abyss = Pride 😛

So in essence, The Abyss by being the opposition of all Virtues *IS* Pride, since Garriott considers Pride as the lack of Virtue. 😛

Also this is the only dungeon not connected underground through the Virtues Chambers. Why ? Because it’s not connected to any of the three principles, just like Humility 😛 If you look at the Abyss as the opposition to the Three Principles, then it fits perfectly with the Humility which is outisde of them as well.

And dude let’s face it : there are 8 cities, 8 virtues, 8 stones, 8 dungeons – so of course the Abyss is connected to Magincia and Humility. Claiming otherwise is just… jumping through hoops. (Unless you stick to U9 canon and have the Abyss tied to Spirituality :P)

Also wasn’t Veramocor fixing the Shrine of Humility ?
