BioWare Tuesdays

Well, shortly after I posted about it last week, update 2.1 for Star Wars: The Old Republic went live, bringing a plethora of new chracter customization options to the game…not all of which are available to free-to-play players, mind you.

It also seems that the Gree will be making a return to the game in an event to be held later this month.

There wasn’t much other BioWare-related news this week, apart from the above. Someone reasoned out that the genophage of Mass Effect fame could in fact be a viable form of biological warfare, more or less. And Steam put their Mass Effect bundle on sale for a day last week.

Oh, and…well, this news isn’t specifically BioWare-related, but it will no doubt affect future BioWare games: EA is getting rid of its unpopular Online Pass program. The Online Pass, you all may recall, is a method by which several game publishers have attempted to make some money off of the used game market, by requiring players who buy used games to pay an additional fee to access any associated online features (e.g. multiplayer).

They’re getting rid of it because next-gen consoles are gonna make it redundant.

Yeah, I just finished recapping the Xbox One reveal from yesterday. Seems console manufacturers are removing any need for publishers to use Online Pass (or similar).

Ouya may be a good platform to release on if the game doesn’t need insane power. Otherwise it’s just the same loss of rights across generations. A game shouldn’t be “always on”, even if it’s an MMO with no single player. It should at least run and have a working title screen with menus letting you do things.

Hopefully the new console generation isn’t so bleak and they co-exist with openness, spirited competition and a few drinks together in the end. Or beat each other with patent clubs until the snow’s red. :/

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it just the xbox one that forces you to be online once every 24 hours to play a game? And the only console to make you pay twice when you buy a game?

I don’t think ps4 or the wiiu pull that used game bullshit.

You’re right from what I’ve read recently on ./ and such. That’s not good for Microsoft if the new influx of money is insufficient to counteract the wash of negative emotions felt by the consumers. I’m open to Nintendo’s new systems, and god help me, could forgive Sony if the PS4 is friendly to indies and merit-based, democratic ratings.
