The Savage Empire Remake: The Barrab are Cold

Scythifuge admits, in his most recent update to The Savage Empire Remake’s Facebook page, that life has sidetracked him from work on the project, and it does indeed sound like the man has a full plate in that thing we call “real life”.

Even so, inspiration for his Exult-based project still struck him recently:

…the Savage Empire cluebook mentions that due to the Barrab living on a tall mesa (tepui), they wear fur clothing because it is cold.

This revision of Savage Empire would use the Serpent Isle side of Exult, which means I could require characters to wear warm clothing while visiting the Barrab. -I- like this idea because, being that Eodon is a savage empire consisting of tropical & temperate rainforests, swampland, semi-arid high-plains & a dangerous, volcanic area, why not a high elevation cold environment that will require the player to prepare?

It’s a keen idea, and if he had the time and energy for it, he could even expand it to craft a new little sidequest in the game, one in which the player must (e.g. by process of slaying large jungle creatures) craft (or have crafted) the gear (robes, hats, boots, etc.) needed to reach the Barrab. Large jungle cats have fine pelts, do they not?

To illustrate the point, he also published some sample art showing some of the tribespeople.

    Nice artwork and insightful observation regarding elevation and temperature. Venezuela for example, while in the 80’s (F) during “winter”, is cold in the mountains. I’m happy to see this level of realism manifesting. More please. 🙂

  2. This is a great addition. I could see putting a “hot” zone around the volcano too, similar to what was in Furnace for Serpent Isle (needed Chill spell). Good job Scythifuge!

    Its nice to see that Exult is extending the lifespan of these games. The Ultima 7 engine is a favorite, even if the combat is a little ‘meh’.
