News Roundup For Forgotten World and Ultima IX: Redemption

There has been some brief news on the Ultima IX mod and remake front this month.

On July 6th, there was a brief update to the Ultima IX: Redemption website, the ambitious project to recreate a whole new Ultima IX using the Morrowind engine.  RedPotion explained the lack of news the past few months, and promised that work continues and more news is forthcoming.

Just wanted to say hello and thank you all again for your support. It has been quite some time since our last post, but didn’t want anyone to think it had to do with us abandoning our labor of love.

In truth, we’ve just been a little lazy the past few months in posting an update but we have actually gotten some news together.

I need to finalize some of our progress into a coherent block of text for you all to read, so stay tuned.

Then yesterday, Iceblade stopped by the forums to tell us of his most recent update to Forgotten World, a project that hopes to modify the original Ultima IX data files, creating higher resolution textures, bug fixes, and new places to explore.

I know its been awhile and I wish I can say stuff has been happening, but real life has just zapped the time from most of the us for past few months.

I should start having more time coming first week in August at which point, I will be begin getting a patch compiled of stuff I’ve worked and completed too many moons ago.  Expect several memorable bugs to be fixed.

I know all too well how real life can get in the way of our passion projects.  I hope to see more news and screenshots from the Ultima IX: Redemption team, and I wish them luck.  Looking forward to the next release of Forgotton World too, since I’ve been floored by how good hi-res textures make Ultima IX look.

Here’s hoping the infamous floating Rune/Sigil bugs, that Dawn gal, and the HELL OF MOONGLOW are amongst the fixes bugs.

    *crosses fingers*

I never even knew that Dawn girl existed until I read the complete Ultima IX transcript many years after playing. The only time I ever met her was starting a new game and immediately flying to Dawn to see her. Somehow the thought of this woman floating off into the sky and joining the Avatar constellation never ceased to amuse me.

      • Sergorn says:

Yeah she worked fine for the first couple of times I played the game…. then she just shot to the sky. For a while you cuold talk to her by rushin it, but now it’s gotten to a point where it’s impossible.

I wish I could fix that Moonglow crashing bug, but I can’t even reproduce it anymore.

      • Sergorn says:

Well the thing I can tell you about these Moonglow crashing bug is that the only way to fix it was to play with the clipping plane all the way down.

I had the exact same crashes when trying to sail manually actually : camera pans ou… ames crash. Unless if I had the clipping plane way down.

As a matter of fact… I have saves with theses issues if you want! I just checked. I’m not sure what is the cause but this can’t even be my computer because here I tried on my laptop and I have the exact same crashes :

Game crashing when Tydus tells you where to get the staff (you have the small cutscene.. and crash), unless the clipping plane is way down.
Game crashing when trying to sail manually unless clipping is way down (this doesn’t even seem to be an issue everywhere… but ALWAYS in Trinsic, to the point that auto travelling there crashes the game!)
I even have a save in Moonglow that is so screwed… the ame crashes no matter what after a few seconds even with the clipping plane way down.

        So if that could help…

One thing I noted though : on my destop computer Serpent’s Hold was screwed : I’d die no mater hat, the game wouln’t remov the water when I passed the force field. It worked on my laptop though (altogh I do have a save riht before passing the laptop).

But i any case if you want I can pass along these saves and how to make it crash in case that would help figuring out this issue; I’m at a loss really.

What’s your OS? Is it 32-bit? Also what the details of your graphics card?

I’ve already tried getting the Tydus thing to crash even with somebody else’s savegame, and it just doesn’t happen. I really think the graphics code for the game was rushed out the door leaving a random nasty bug in the code that for a long time, most computers could handle for extended periods.

      • Sergorn says:

The desktop has Windows 7 x64, the laptop Windows 7 x32

The only other thing the two computers have in common is that they both have an ATI video cards (though obvously a different one).

I can’t believe, I had completely forgotten that I had already compiled the patch months ago. It looks about ready for beta-testing actually. So anybody up for a little in-game testing?

    • Sergorn says:

If you have a specific list of thing to check, I can give it a quick whirl with a fresh install (better not use saves that might be corrupted). I don’t have time to play through the whole game though.

(Note do dungy: for some reason I don’t get email notificaition for new comments with your news :-P)

      • iceblade says:

Well I could really use a test that goes up to the first Terfin visit. But I suppose a test through the just Britain will be useful to start with. I’m not sure I have your email, though.

      • Sergorn says:

Hum you should have, I think I sent you a general mil about ltima Returna couple days a go too. In any case, I’m sendng you a mail now about this!

I only just received the email about Ultima return.
