Ultima 7’s 20th Anniversary

To mark the 20th anniversary of the release of Ultima 7, the Ultima Codex has put together a tribute website featuring a truly mind-boggling number of development documents for the game, supplied by Bill Randolph and the Origin Museum. Also to be found is an interview with one of the game’s developers, Brian Martin, as well as various patches, utilities, and fan projects concerning the game, and even some art from the Japanese-language Super Nintendo release of the game!

So take some time to look over the history of Ultima 7. And if you haven’t already, pick up and play a copy of the game for yourself!

  1. This is truly awesome. It’s fascinating to see how the game evolved over time. Hopefully you also have some info on Ultima 8 that’ll be released some day too. 🙂

Nice content dump and excellent annotations. I love IV, V, VI and VII, but there was something special about VI and VII. VII took things to and grander and more refined scale and pace than did the previous, though it could have used larger and deeper dungeons.

Very very impressive collection. The interview is kind of wistful though. I wonder if that Sheri Hobbs article on Shakespearean pronouns still exists, especially conjugation. A lot of the text didn’t sound ‘right’ to me in the game, but I never back-checked to see if the dialogue complied with personal pronoun grammar for pre 17th century English.

PS3 would be the best way for this game ULTIMA 7

Unlikely. The interface is heavily mouse-dependent, and I’m skeptical as to how well a console controller would serve as a stand-in for that control method.
