Zygon Dragon Has A Question About Ultima 5's Soundtrack

Actually, and perhaps more correctly, I should say that his question is about a particular reproduction of the Ultima 5 soundtrack, which he was unable to reproduce (if I read him right).

Well. I’ve been searching for more info on this for a while now. Last night just before my Apple IIe blew up I think I’ve worked it out. (Now I have a broken Apple IIe

The guy that posted the youtube video wit the music says on his website that he mixed it in after.

I have an Apple IIe with a midi interface card and using a Roland Sound Canvas you can access one channel only. Ultima V lets you configure this. But you are limited to one channel so to reproduce the music he has on his youtube is impossible. If anyone else can confirm this let me know.

This sort of question is beyond me, though it is an interesting query about some very classic pieces of computer audio hardware. If anyone can supply an answer, please do!

    Correct.

If you choose Passport midi device its looking for a midi interface and you must have a midi device connected in order to reproduce sound. First problem I’ve found is that your limited to 1 channel only. I can’t seem to use multi channel. Thus limiting the amount of sounds.

Before my Apple IIe blew an IO I did manager to get it playing sound on my Roland Sound Canvas 8850. Sounded good but no way like the youtube video though. Due to the lack of multi channel.

I dare not risk inserting my midi interface again to my Apple IIe. I’m worried it will blow again. Its a homebrew card someone made many years ago and there is solder all over the shop. Probably why it blew.

Anyone else that has tried this let me know.

    Thanks,

    Hello,
I had Apple IIe connected to a PC, not MIDI modules.
and used many VSTi in 1 channel.

Sorry, due to lack of detailed description,
    I can’t speak English Well 🙁

  3. I don’t know the answer, but there’s a very good chance that the guys at Vintage Computer Forum’s Apple II Series area will. They’ll also know how to identify the problem with the broken IIe and fix it, though you might need to learn to solder (as I am now).

If anyone gets the music working beyond 1 channel, please share the resulting soundfiles online — I know I’d like it for my Ultima music archive (trying to get a copy of every possible card/system combination), others probably will as well.
