The Serpent Isle Remake Suffers a Setback

Thepal has some bad news, Dragons and Dragonettes:

My hard drive died.

The lucky thing for me is that in an effort to make more space on the drive that died I recently moved everything to a different hard drive.

Except my mods.

Since this is something that has happened before I do have a backup of Serpent Isle (I learn from my mistakes), but I’m not sure exactly how much I’ve lost. Fawn is done in the last backup. I know that. Hopefully Moonshade and the Great Northern Forest are as well. All work on snowy lands to the north will be gone however.

That’s tragic, although it’s good that he had some backups. Still, it’s never fun to lose old work. However, he’s come up with a bit of a time-saving (hopefully time-saving) solution that should allow him to catch back up with his progress:

In the interests of speeding things up, I’ve decided to take a page out of Origin’s books. One of the more time-consuming parts of this mod has been making the faces for the characters. I have to choose a model, and attempt to find photos of good enough quality, with the correct facial expressions, facing the correct directions. Instead, I will be opening this up to the community…Why not star in our favourite game?

I’ll be looking for people that at least somewhat resemble characters from the original game first, but a few changes wouldn’t hurt. So, if you are interested (or happen to know/date/stalk someone that looks like an Ulima character), keep an eye on this space and I’ll let you know what I need (basically, neutral expression from front and sides, with decent lighting and preferably minimal shadows)

Hmm…actually…if anyone here happens to have some nice tattoo art and wants to model for Lydia, that could help too…So far the designs I’ve done all….well…suck.

I would guess that the best way to make your interest in becoming in in-game face known is to drop a comment on his article. You can drop comments here as well; Thepal does visit the site regularly. But better to do it at his site.

I have a six drive RAID5 (1 TB ea) and an external HDD that receives a compressed incremental backup daily, but lost a 700+ page journal to HDD failure once. My compositions were lost as well, but at least I remember how those go mostly.

You could take portrait photos of multiple real people, extract the eyes, nose, etc., and recombine them in random patterns. Just ensure the skin tones are similar and leave plenty of alpha around the cuts/transitions.

I’ve bought a new external hard drive that I’ll be backing up to a lot more regularly now.

As for your portrait photo idea, that’s a lot of work (it’s basically what I was having to do). I’m trying to reduce the workload…

One thing more that I love about Mac. Time Machine. Plug in a disk and turn on one setting and you have a complete automatic backup system. Nothing more needed doing 😉

A real shame. Lets hope you have not lost too much work.
