Skyrim

Will Skyrim v1.5 have a ranged killcam?

RPGWatch reports that according to at least one source, the Bethesda Blog briefly leaked the fact that the next major Skyrim update will boost its visceral impact up a notch or two with the addition of ranged and magic “killcams”…which I would assume are special cameras that offer alternative angles on monster and NPC combat deaths.

Not surprisingly, Skyrim captured top prize at GDC.

The Game Developers Choice Awards were held last night during GDC 2012, and paid tribute to industry’s best games and game makers of 2011. Bethesda was the big winner of the event, scoring the night’s Game of the Year award for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, while leaving other studios to wonder why they even bother showing up to these things anymore.

Though, to be fair, Portal 2 took home a few awards, and Battlefield 3 won in the technology category (deservingly so).

Well, the killcams were featured in the GameJam video. Maybe they’ll be implementing more stuff from it. Can only hope so!

Do people actually like killcams? I didn’t like that feature in Fallout 3, and it seems it’s something that’s spreading. I read the other day that the new XCOM game will do that too.

Especially in a first person game, I find it really immersion-breaking. The camera and control gets pulled away from you for a slow-motion, poorly animated death scene. Even ones that are done well get old quickly, especially in games where you’re killing vast numbers of enemies.

Hopefully it’s an optional feature, so I’ll be able to turn it off.

  3. I usually play in 3rd person mode. Feels more natural. First person perspective has always felt weird to me as you could have a rat gnawing on your ankle and be unaware of it. In that respect the melee kill cams felt good. More like finishing moves, than separate events. I can see why they didn’t include them with ranged attacks though. Some of those kills could be REALLY long shots, and wouldn’t include cool special attacks. Still want to know how I’m taking people’s heads clean off with a mace though.

I don’t like the kill cams in Skyrim. I prefer to just have normal combat. It’s kinda immersion breaking.
