Ultima 3 in PCMag's Classic Games List

Dear all,

I saw the following story from PCMAG.com that classified 10 Classic Computer RPGs from the 1980s. It seems logical that Ultima be there and, in an interesting twist, the authors decided to tip their hats to Ultima III instead of Ultima IV or Ultima V.

While the entire Ultima series is legendary in computer RPG circles, it’s worth paying particular attention to the third entry in the series, Exodus.

I have actually played most of the games, though a long time ago. As the authors suggest, I also have not heard of certain.

Have a great read,
Jc

Truthfully, Ultima III has always been my least favorite. It lacks the quirkiness and simple gameplay of Ultima I and II, and the whole process of leveling and combat is just painful and slow. And the interface, manually transferring gold, food, and armour between characters, it may be more realistic, but it’s just not fun.

I recognize that Ultima III was a colossal step forwards in the history of RPGs, but I just don’t find the game fun.

@Dungy I agree with those comments, but I think a lot of its importance may be due to how it compared against other popular RPGs at the time. For me (it was my first Ultima) it awakened me to the world outside the JRPG and was a stepping stone to greater games. Things in retrospect almost always look different than they did in the moment.

Any 80s RPG list that leaves Quest for Glory off is stupid.

That said, not a bad list. Ultima III was my least favourite as well… Death by lack of food was ridiculous. I ended up cheating to make the game playable (create characters, transfer food to one character, delete other characters, create new characters, rinse and repeat until I had large amount of food). The rest of the game was ok… but food ran out way too fast. My least favourite game of all time is Shadowlands, which had a similar issue. It’s the only game I ever owned that I just couldn’t bring myself to play.
