Pentagram Snapshots Updated

Actually, they were updated a while ago, but it’s taken me this long to get around to reporting about it and uploading the changed files to the project entry.

The most significant update, to both the OS X and Windows binaries of Pentagram, is the addition of the HQ4X scaler. Dominus, who committed that particular change, warns that HQ4X is a very processor-intensive scaler, both to use and to compile. That said, if you wanted to play Ultima 8 at a ridiculously high detail and resolution setting, you now have that option.

I think Dominus also folded in Jason Penney’s CoreAudio MIDI support patch, so the OS X build of Pentagram should now support SoundFont. At least that’s what I get from reading the changelog.

As noted above, I’ve updated the downloads available at the project entry. Go and grab them there, or at the Pentagram project site.

  1. Dominus says:

The most significant change for Pentagram is that the location of the pentagram.ini on Windows changed. It used to be in the folder where pentagram was installed to. It is now in the APPDATA folder. Where that is on which Windows is detailed in the readme (both in the one that comes with Pentagram and on the homepage). No change for Windows 9x.
    Thanks for posting 😉

So Pentagram *is* still being updated? Is it actually properly playable?

It is. I completed Ultima VIII with Pentagram over a year ago, and didn’t run into any issues whatsoever. All it lacks really is a simpler installation/menu thing.
