Wing Commander 1 & 2 Released On Good Old Games! (Dungeon Keeper 2, Also.)

Well, it turns out that I was wrong in my prediction; Good Old Games did not release the Ultima 4Ultima 6 trilogy today. What they did release, however, is only slightly less awesome; today, at GOG.com, you can find available for sale Wing Commander and Wing Commander 2 in a two-for-one combo pack, as well as Dungeon Keeper 2!

Come and get it!

No doubt there will be a lot of fine articles posted to the Wing Commander CIC today, accompanied by much fanfare and celebration on the #Wingnut IRC channel; do be sure to check in at both places to take in what they have to offer.

I’ll be posting a few bits of Wing Commander-related content later today as well, though probably nothing as spectacular as what the CIC will have to offer.

Are these the Kilrathi Saga versions?

    Regulard DOS version AFAIK.

I just don’t get with they didn’t go with the Kilrathi Saga ones.

If they sold you the best, most complete versions of these games now, you wouldn’t have any reason to re-buy them again down the road.

Would love to own the original WC, but not a big fan of these sorts of piecemeal releases. No reason they couldn’t include the expansions like they did with the budget CD release of WC2 sitting on my shelf.

The official word from GOG is that they would like to release the games with expansions, but are unable to at the moment and are unable to comment about why, though they are working on it. Most GOG releases are as ‘complete’ as is possible, and apart from all the EA games, I can only think of one game taht comes to mind that was released without its expansion (Space Rangers 2) and that was apparently due to a problem with licensing it – there was another party involved with the expansion that they were unable to negotiate with. I imagine it’s something similar with the EA games?

AFAIK all WCs addons were developped internally at Origin so there is no reason why there should be a licensing issue.

Privateer is even weirder in that since the released full talkie CD version but where they removed the Righteous Fire files altough the addon was an integral part of the enhanced CD version

Hmm well in that case I have no idea. All I know then is that it’s something to do with EA then not wanting them released, which does seem really odd.

Actually, I just spotted this from one of the GOG staff in the forum:

“Guys, it turns out that getting the rights for the expansions for the EA games is very, very, very complicated. While we are (of course) working on them, the rights clearance will not be resolved any time soon.”
