"Nightly" Open Thread

I’m posting the open thread early today, because this evening will largely be consumed with travel and I don’t think I’ll have time to post much else as a result.

So instead, how about that new EA studio, Victory Games, eh? Bringing back the Command & Conquer franchise…or possibly rebooting it. One of the two.

Honestly, I nearly spat out my beer when I read that Jon Van Caneghem was heading up the new studio…I was a die-hard New World Computing fan and Might & Magic player back in the day. World of Xeen? Classic, and a hell of a concept for its day. The guy is, rightfully, a legend.

In other words, I’m actually kinda hopeful that Victory will crank out a solid, enjoyable game.

Hearing the might and magic background does make me more hopeful… perhaps he can get the franchise back on track?

I must admit I cracked and bought the newer C&C games in the steam sale, although I’ve only ever really loved the first two of the tiberium series.

In vaguely Ultima related news, it looks like I need to update the minecraft texture pack, since notch insists on adding more stuff to the game! 🙂

Will hopefully get that done this weekend…

Oh man, World of Xeen. I watched my dad play that game for hours on end. Good times there. I also played a good bit of Anvil of Dawn, another game in his credits (which I later traded in for the superior Stonekeep, but I still appreciated the drawing magic schtick).

As for CnC, I’m not so excited. The series needs to die.

Letting the best RTS franchise of all time dies? No Way!

Well granted the last game did conclude the whole Tiberian plotline, but still.

Speaking of which I never could understand why Tiberian Twilight got so bashed by gamers and critics alike. Gods forbid a developpers try to take a fresh perspective on a genre rather than just rehashing the same thing AGAIN!

Admitedly: C&C4’s gameplay – probably on account that it was different – wasn’t quite as polished and mastered as C&C3 and RA3 were, but it was still pretty good. Oh an in spite of the new mechanis it really FELT like a C&C game in term of looks, feel and general tone.

Of course I’m not quite sure what to expect from a new C&C… Jon Van Caneghem was nice and all, but C&C has its own world and style – I wouldn’t want another Generals crapfest.

And I still want my full scale Scrin invasion 🙁

I never played CnC4. The series was dead to me with the derivative-and-a-half CnC3. CnC4 was pure horse corpse flagellation.

I’d much rather see a fresh IP. Or at least pick up one of the many cooler properties that EA has in its back pocket and go with that. I could stand a Battle For Middle Earth 3. BFME the first had some very ambitious game design. BFME 2… Not so much. Maybe BFME 3 could be a redemption.

Heh I obviously have to disagree. I felt C&C3 was a wonderful game worthy of the IP in everyway. It was true to the Tiberian universe and treated is respectfully which I honestly wasnt expecting after the travesty that was the Generals sub-franchise.

And it had a great plot with some really thrilling moment – the minute the Scrin finally invaded was jawdropping.

In truth this is after C&C3 that I began to change my views about EA eventually doing another Ultima because I felt if they could do a C&C worthy of the name therr was no reason they could not do it for an Ultima afterall.

Arguably it didnt bring much new in term of gameplay compared to C&C2 and RA2 so it was a bit formulatic (which is probably why they tried to renew the gameplay with C&C4) but then you dont peole complaining about SC2 😛

RA3 was pretty great too but i was dissapointed it had three separate stories instead of the single intertwined story C&C3 has. And Ive always been dissapointed they cut all ties to C&C – I mean RA was origi ally the prequel… Oh well.

I just hope the new C&C is not like Generals
