And of course, I'd be remiss to not mention Skyrim

That would be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, for those of you who didn’t catch the VGAs this past weekend. Here’s the trailery goodness:

Dragon! TROGDOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRR!

This was one of the more surprising announcements to come out of the Spike Video Game Awards, and one that may be of particular interest to the Ultima remake/modding community. Though I’ve lately been on a bit of a tirade against the use of game toolkits as the means for developing new Ultima content and remakes of extant Ultima titles, I do recognize that many would-be development teams don’t necessarily have the technical firepower at their disposal to pull off a project made with Unity or the Unreal engine. And for such teams, using toolkits for existing games is…a reasonable means of producing something.

Now, granted, it’s far too early to speculate whether Skyrim will ship with an editing toolkit of any kind; all we know about the game for sure is that it uses a totally new engine. Still, if in fact it does ship with some manner of editor, we can reasonably expect that some enterprising types will take a stab at making something Ultima-related with it.

Hmmm. Well, you can certainly hope that if they do release a construction set for Skyrim, it’ll at least have as much flexibility as the Oblivion one.

Whilst id Tech 5 would’ve been nice, considering this game has probably been in development since FO3 was released, that does seem a tad unlikely. Hopefully it’ll be a decent enough engine though.

  2. It’s apparently a Bethesda “in house” engine, rather than anything licensed, so…yeah, it probably has been in development for a while. Nothing wrong with that, unless it displays the bugs and “irregularities” that Bethesda engines are occasionally known for.

I’m not sure ID Tech 5 (note I hate how they renamed every ID engine as ID Tech whatever :P) would be serviceable for big seamless world.

In any case look forward to this new game.

With adaptations, it could be. But as this game was started before Bethesda acquired id Software, it’d be a bit silly to switch engines like this now.
